چکیده

High-resolution size-resolved mass concentration of organic and inorganic species present in/on sub-micron particles measured during the PACIFIC 2001 field study in the Lower Fraser Valley (LFV) are presented. The measurements of major particulate species (organics, sulfate, nitrate and ammonium) were made in situ and in real time at three different sites representing urban (Slocan Park), semi-rural (Sumas) and rural (Langley) areas, using two Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometers (AMSs). The total non-refractory PM1.0 mass concentrations at the three sites were found to range from 0.12 to 24.50mgm , with an average concentration of 4.76mgm . A large variability in aerosol composition was observed in the LFV, depending on meteorological conditions. Generally, during southwesterly wind conditions, inorganic species accounted for 50% of total mass loadings in the LFV, while during stagnant conditions organic species made up the majority of the particle mass. The organic aerosol species exhibit a bimodal size distribution, while the inorganic species are in most cases confined to the accumulation mode centered around 400 nm. Background sulfate levels of 1mgm 3 were observed in the LFV during the entire campaign. Transport is found to be an important factor controlling the composition of sulfate in the LFV. Several photochemical events leading to the observation of substantial increases of sulfate in the LFV were also identified. Many of these events involve sulfate-dominated growth of small particles and appear to occur on a regional scale within the LFV. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Chronicle of Datura Toxicity in the 18th and 19th Century

Background: Datura stramonium is a poisonous and common flowering plant that is a member of the Solanacae family. Datura poisonings are a rare occurrence in the 21st century, making toxicological information on this plant sparse. Historical information on Datura provides useful information on the clinical symptoms and characteristics of poisonings. This review looks at the state of knowledge on...

Modelling of chemical and physical aerosol properties during the ADRIEX aerosol campaign

A global aerosol model with relatively high resolution is used to simulate the distribution and radiative effect of aerosols during the Aerosol Direct Radiative Impact Experiment (ADRIEX) campaign in August and September 2004. The global chemical transport model Oslo CTM2 includes detailed chemistry, which is coupled to aerosol partitioning of sulphate, nitrate and secondary organic aerosols. I...

Overview of the field measurement campaign in Hyytiälä, August 2001 in the framework of the EU project OSOA

As part of the OSOA (Origin and formation of Secondary Organic Aerosols) project, two intensive field campaigns were conducted in Melpitz, Germany and Hyytiälä, Finland. This paper gives an overview of the measurements made during the Hyytiälä campaign, which was held between 1 and 16 August 2001. Various instrumental techniques were used to achieve physical and chemical characterisation of aer...

Using MODIS data for nonlinear hazard analysis of the Middle East aerosols

Aerosols are among the most important of atmospheric pollutants observed like the microscopic particulate matter in the lower parts of the troposphere. The main purpose of this study is introducing a new method based on satellite images processing results and nonlinear analysis (fractal based) to investigate the origin and dynamical mechanism of aerosols distribution in North Africa and the Mid...
